Black Powder is the mixture of Potassium Nitrate, Charcoal, and sulfur. It is possible to mix by hand but would take quite a long time, this is a lot of work and is not recommended. Not only is it extremely slow and dangerous, but it would be impossible to obtain a consistent supply of black powder. To get the results we want we will be using a rock tumbler.
Rock tumblers are used to polish gemstones, but work rather well as powder mills. Load the tumbler with the BRASS tumbling pellets, just the right amount of Potassium Nitrate, Charcoal, and Sulfur. Give it 24 hours and you will have a very powerful product.
You can buy many different tumblers. Try not to buy the toy tumblers. You can buy a good rock tumbler that will be well worth the extra money. Make sure the rock tumbler does not have a lid that leaks. If you are using a little toy version with a screw on cap, you must take extra precaution to assure a good seal. Vinyl Electrical tape will do the job.
You will find that there are solid plastic, rubber, and metal tumblers with rubber lining. Avoid purchasing the metal tumbler with the rubber lining. They work fine but are very noisy and in the event that an explosion does occur the metal would turn into deadly shrapnel. The solid plastic and rubber tumblers are a lot quieter and would be a lot less dangerous if they exploded.
